New York City Window Tint Laws — NYPD Enforcement Guide
New York City is one of the most actively enforced tint jurisdictions in the country. NYPD officers frequently cite tint violations during routine traffic stops across all five boroughs.

Medically ReviewedNew York State Tint Law in New York City
New York Vehicle and Traffic Law §375(12-a) governs window tint statewide, including all five boroughs of New York City. There is no NYC-specific local tint ordinance — state law applies uniformly. New York's standards are among the strictest in the nation:
- Front side windows: Must allow at least 70% VLT
- Back side windows (sedans): Must allow at least 70% VLT
- Back side windows (SUVs/vans): Must allow at least 70% VLT
- Rear window: Must allow at least 70% VLT
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint only above the AS-1 line
New York applies its 70% minimum to all windows — one of only a few states with this blanket restriction. This means any visible aftermarket tint on any window (except the windshield strip) is technically illegal without a medical exemption.
NYPD Tint Enforcement Across the Five Boroughs
The New York Police Department (NYPD) and New York State Police (NYSP) both enforce tint violations in the city and on major arteries like the FDR Drive, BQE, Cross Bronx Expressway, and Belt Parkway. Notable enforcement patterns:
- NYPD uses VLT meters at both moving stops and at stationary checkpoints
- Tint violations in NYC are equipment violations — they generate summonses that require a court appearance or payment
- NY tint fines can be significant: base fines plus NYC surcharges often total $150–$300+ per violation
- Repeat offenders face escalating fines and potential license suspension for accumulated violations
New York City's Medical Tint Exemption Process
NYS VTL §375(12-a)(b) authorizes medical exemptions issued by licensed New York physicians. Given that New York's tint law prohibits virtually any visible tint, medical exemptions are particularly important for NYC residents who need darker windows.
Note: New York medical tint exemptions are priced at $350 — higher than most states due to the additional physician documentation requirements under New York law.
